Research Assistant At UCSF Global Programs for Research & Training


Background:

Global Programs for Research & Training is registered as an international NGO in Kenya, wholly owned and affiliated with the University of California San Francisco (UCSF)

Global Programs is seeking a qualified Research Assistant to oversee recruitment, participant consent and data collection activities at the Kisumu County Hospital (KCH) research site as well as assist with the transcription of recorded exit interviews and the translation of interview transcripts from Kiswahili and Dholuo into English. The position is a short-term grant-funded contract based in Kisumu.

The research assistant (RA), under the direct supervision of the study coordinator and overall supervision by principal investigators, will provide data collection support to the study.

Roles & Responsibilities:

· Coordinate closely with KCH staff to carry out participant recruitment including screening potential participants and obtaining informed consent.

· Coordinate closely with participants, including regular follow-up phone calls, to ensure the participants’ retention in the study and participation in regular research encounters for the purposes of data collection.

· Assist participants, according to the study protocol, to complete comprehensive electronic surveys via tablet.

· Review and upload data collected to the study’s secure server

· Liaise with the health facility staff for the support and smooth flow of study activities.

· Effectively communicate with study team about the project activities, with weekly and monthly reports of study progress.

· Adherence to the principles of ethical research according to human subject review protocols.

· Oversee reimbursement for study participants and submit monthly reconciliations to the GPK finance team.

Key Requirements:

· Degree in the Social Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Nutrition, Public Health or any other relevant field

· Experience conducting interviews for the purpose of research, 2‐3 years of experience strongly preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills, including the ability to maintain frequent contact using cell phone, email, and internet-based phone (i.e., Skype)
  • Competent with computer software applications including Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

· Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in English, Kiswahili and Dholuo

· Enthusiasm for working with PLWH/A

· Ability to manage a variety of study tasks with attention to detail, follow‐up on tasks and adhere to deadlines

· Open‐minded and willing to learn new skills and approaches to research
